Empowering gender diverse ākonga/students

This hui is focussed on supporting schools to become more inclusive of their rainbow ākonga, whānau and kaiako and will focus specifically on diverse-gendered rangatahi as part of this community.

In this hui,

  1. we will share the research report below that Grow Waitaha has been undertaking into moving from tokenistic to authentic inclusion,
  2. hear the lived experiences of diverse-gendered individuals who have attended our Canterbury schools, and then
  3. work together to explore ways each of our schools can create safer and more empowering places of learning for this part of our school communities who often experience high levels of prejudice and discrimination.

Audience: Board chairs and Board members, school tumuaki (principals) and other senior leaders (ideally 2 from each kura)

In preparation for this hui, we have undertaken an extensive project to develop a new resource which provides detailed information and recommendations for Boards and Senior leaders as they undertake strategic planning processes and Health Curriculum review that is currently a priority action for all kura.

This “Empowering gender diverse ākonga” hui is in collaboration with Grow Waitaha and Core Education, Evaluation Associates and the Ministry of Education and is part of the LinC Rourou series which aims to amplify marginalised voices for advocacy and to provoke system change.

The LinC Project (Leaders in Community) has been working towards its vision of seeing ‘thriving leaders active in equitable and flourishing communities’ of Ōtautahi and surrounds since 2014. Responding to the current needs of community leaders, LinC Rourou is an initiative which evolved from LinC Activator (public speaker series) and LinC Cultivator (peer-to-peer leadership programme).

LinC Rourou hosts spaces to listen to contemporary voices, to collaborate with others, and to address gnarly issues.

The series explores ways to amplifying marginalised voices for advocacy and to provoke system change by:

  • hosting spaces to listen to contemporary issues and voices
  • modelling inclusion of diversity
  • collaborating with others to address gnarly issues
  • empowering community leaders to use their strengths to design and host initiatives open to all
