The Community and Recreation Department encompasses Greenspace, Community, District Regeneration, Libraries and Aquatics Centres. As a new ‘team’ of managers, we wanted to quickly establish a culture of shared vision and purpose, and develop an overarching strategy for our collective works….Tammi quickly created an energetic and trust-centred environment. Her perceptive approach allowed for some of the more challenging conversations to take place and then build on those, toward developing the shared vision and purpose that will ultimately serve as a foundation for our Departmental Strategy.

Shout out to my tuakana/uso Tammi Martin for journeying with me and showing me how to hold spaces with spherical intelligence, that is to know the theory/intellectual side of engagement, but to also read the signs in the room, the people (emotional intelligence), own our cultural intelligence and trust our 'gut feeling' or intuitive intelligence when steering and navigating talanoa. Some things cannot be taught only caught
Daisy Lavea-Timo, Senior Faciltiator- Leadership Lab / Core Education
Tammi has spent a significant part of the last decade as a full-time lecturer contributing to the SSPE across our two major undergraduate programmes – the Bachelor of Education (Physical Education) and the Bachelor of Sport Coaching. Tammi has crossed discipline boundaries and also taught courses on sociology of sport and physical education as well as mentoring students on teaching and sport coaching practicums. Her abilities here are unquestioned. The quality of her work is always high, her unguarded approach makes her a wonderful work colleague and these traits do not go unnoticed by the students either. Her course and teacher evaluations, which are completed by her students at the end of each course, are inevitably positive and glowing about her delivery, quality of content and openness.

"I love the opportunity to collaboratively create and facilitate authentic 'bumping spaces' characterised by dimensions of Hauora/wellbeing (physical, social, emotional or spiritual). These 'spaces' are where the magic happens on both a personal and collective level. "
Tammi’s experience in education and leadership span 20 years. She has worked in diverse teaching contexts – as a University Lecturer in Initial Teacher Education at the University of Canterbury, a secondary physical education and health teacher, in special education and alternative education contexts here in Aotearoa and internationally.
Tammi is also an active community development facilitator working in her own community of Waikuku and also a wide range of diverse communities across Canterbury.
Tammi’s passion is to facilitate spaces where the unique contributions of many combine to ensure emergent possibilities are captured in creative, culturally responsive, courageous projects which aim to address a range of complex issues. She does this through developing deep relational interactions within groups in order to authenticate and extend skills and knowledge in a range of contexts.
“Something quite extraordinary happens when a group of talented, gorgeously giving, richly diverse and loving human beings come together in a space where a collision of intent is purposefully nurtured.”
