CDHB Specialist Mental Health Services

Connected Leaders Programme

The Specialist Mental Health Services Connected Leaders’ Programme is designed by and implemented with managers, senior doctors and nursing and allied health leaders across the service.

In 2017 Leadership Lab worked with SMHS to develop a vision and strategy and to design a customised programme that supported leaders in the implementation of the strategy. The leadership development initiative was designed to enhance leadership capability across the service and support the achievement of its vision, despite the complexity and “ongoing, unrelenting pressures”of its environment.

In 2018, 24 leaders from across SMHS participated in Cohort One and another 24 leaders are currently involved in Cohort Two.  Connected Leaders builds on the 2020 Leadership Programme that Leadership Lab delivered to a cross-section of CDHB leaders in 2013 and 2014. This programme was one of a number of initiatives designed to support leaders in achieving the aims of the Vision 2020 strategy articulated by CDHB chief executive David Meates.

"Leadership Lab do things differently. For 6 years they’ve worked tirelessly with us to support and enable a culture shift - emphasising positive action and individual responsibility within the interconnectedness and complexities of a health system. They’ve very often gone above and beyond what they’ve been contracted to do because, in their own words, “this is important work”. They don't simply operate as a consultancy company - they challenge us to do better, to be better - to be the social change our patients and the public can expect"
